Costing & pricing for makers · on your phone

From receipt to retail price.

Snap a supplier receipt and Costara turns it into the true cost of every piece — and a price that protects your margin. Your costs, your targets, your math — Costara just reads the receipts and keeps it straight.

Every piece you make has a number.

The beautiful part is yours. Costara quietly does the other half — what each one truly costs to make, and what it should sell for.

from a shoebox of receipts to a confident price · all on your phone

Three moves, and the number is yours.

01

Snap the receipt

Photograph any supplier receipt right from your phone — Costara extracts every line and updates your costs. Or type a purchase in plain words.

02

Cost the unit

Materials, packaging, labor, and overhead roll into a true per-unit cost — fully broken down, with units converted from how you buy to how you use.

03

Set the price

Your markups become wholesale and retail prices, with the margin behind each — and a badge that flags anything underpriced.

No setup marathon: a five-step checklist on your dashboard walks you from first material to first priced product, and ticks itself off as you go.

inside costara

Everything your bench needs, in one app.

Five screens that turn a pile of receipts into prices you can stand behind — costing, intake, inventory, and margin, each a tap away.

Cost-health dashboard

Your whole cost picture, the moment you open the app.

Average margin, inventory value, and exactly which products need a price review — on one screen. The numbers re-figure themselves every time a cost changes, so you always know where you stand.

AI receipt intake

Snap a supplier receipt. Skip the typing.

Photograph any invoice and Costara reads every line, then rolls the new prices straight into your materials. The shoebox of receipts becomes live costs — no spreadsheet, no manual entry.

Materials & inventory

Inventory that keeps its own costs.

Track materials the way you buy them and Costara converts to how you use them — by the gram, the ounce, the millilitre. Every restock updates a weighted-average cost, so your prices never drift out of date.

Shop locations

Know what’s on every shelf — and what sold.

Track the shops and markets that stock your products: count what’s on the shelf in seconds, see the wholesale value sitting out in the world, and catch what’s running low before you need to reorder.

the part spreadsheets miss

Costs drift. Your price shouldn’t just sit there.

A supplier bumps a price and a spreadsheet stays quiet. Costara notices, shows you exactly which products it hurt, and hands you a better price — with the reasoning written out.

The receipt lands

You snap the restock receipt like always. Costara updates the cost — and notices the jump.

The dashboard flags it

Every priced product that change touched, with the margin it left behind. No hunting through formulas.

You answer with a price

One tap gets three honest prices from your own costs and targets, with the why written in plain words. Nothing changes until you accept.

Rather play it out before it happens? The built-in pricing simulator answers “what if wax goes up 10%?” on any product — pure math, free, no credits.

One AI credit = one AI action — a receipt page scanned, a product drafted from a description, or an AI re-price. Costing, materials, and the simulator never use credits. More in the FAQ.

Makers who stopped pricing by gut.

“Turns out a bunch of my soaps were barely breaking even and I had no idea. I bumped a few prices, cut one scent that was never worth the effort, and I'm not doing spreadsheet math at midnight anymore.”

“I used to price my loaves off whatever the shop down the road charged. Now I actually know what the flour, starter, and my time cost me per loaf — so when supplier prices jump, I'm not guessing whether I'm still making money.”

Margins shown across Costara are estimates from your own costs, not audited figures.

No accounting degree required.

Do I need to be good with numbers?
No — that's the whole point. You snap a photo of a supplier receipt and Costara reads the line items and prices; you just review what it found and accept it. From there it works out the true cost of each product and suggests a wholesale and retail price, always showing the margin behind the number so you can see at a glance whether a price is healthy. Nothing is buried in a formula you can't follow, and nothing changes until you say so. If you can take a photo and tap “accept,” you can price like a pro.
I buy in bulk but sell singles.
That's exactly what Costara is built for. Track a material the way you actually buy it — a 50 lb sack of flour, a case of jars, a 5-litre jug of fragrance oil — and use it the way you actually make: by the gram, the ounce, the millilitre, or the single unit. Costara converts automatically, metric and imperial both, so a candle that uses 180 g of wax from a 10 lb slab is costed correctly without you doing any division. Buy in bulk, make in batches, sell singles — the per-unit cost always reflects what one finished item really took.
What exactly is an AI credit?
Every plan includes a monthly pot of AI credits, and one credit covers one AI action: one page of a receipt or recipe scanned (a photo counts as one page), one product drafted from a plain-words description, or one AI re-price. If a scan fails, you're never charged. Monthly credits refresh with each billing month; if you need more, one-time top-up packs never expire, and Costara always spends your monthly credits first. Everyday work — editing materials, costing products, the pricing simulator — uses no credits at all.
Do I need a card to try it?
No. Signing up starts your free trial with a bundle of starter credits — no card, no commitment. You only add a payment method when you choose a plan. And you can cancel in a couple of taps from Settings whenever you like: cancelling during a trial costs nothing, and cancelling later keeps your access until the end of the time you've already paid for.
Is there an iPhone or Android app?
Costara is built phone-first and runs in the browser on any device — snap receipts straight from your phone's camera at the bench or the market. Add it to your home screen (Share → Add to Home Screen on iPhone, Install on Android) and it opens full-screen like any other app, with nothing to download from an app store and updates that arrive on their own.
Can I import my existing spreadsheet?
There's no spreadsheet importer — and most makers turn out not to need one. Your materials arrive by scanning a handful of recent supplier receipts, and your products by describing them in plain words for Costara to draft. A five-step checklist on your dashboard walks you from first material to first priced product, ticking itself off as you go. And nothing gets locked in: everything you enter exports back out to CSV whenever you want it.
What does the AI actually decide?
Less than you might think — on purpose. The AI reads your receipts and writes the plain-language explanations. Every number — costs, margins, and all three suggested prices — is straightforward math from your own recorded costs and your own margin targets. The AI never invents a price, and nothing changes until you accept it.
I'm not in the US — can I use Costara?
Yes. Costara works in 19 currencies — GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD and more — so pick yours once in Settings and every cost, price, and margin reads in your money. Units work in metric and imperial alike, and convert between the two.
Is my data mine?
Completely. Your products, materials, receipts, and prices belong to you, not us. Export everything to CSV or Excel whenever you want, or download your full account, and delete your account and all associated data at any time. We don't sell your data, and the margins shown in Costara are your own estimates based on your costs and prices — private working numbers, never shared. It's your business; Costara just keeps the math straight.
